Netflix won’t be returning to Point Place once more.
Kurtwood Smith shared That ‘90s Show has been canceled after two seasons in a heartfelt note thanking fans for supporting the That ‘70s Show spinoff.
“I know you have been asking me when season 3 is coming, but I have tough news…Netflix will not be renewing,” he wrote on Instagram Oct. 4 alongside a photo of him and costar Debra Jo Rupp, interacting with the studio audience. “I just want to take a minute to say THANK YOU to all of the fans everywhere who supported and watched the show. You have come up to me in random parts of the world when I’m traveling and reached out to me through social media and just been so wonderful.”
Kurtwood, who reprised his role as Red Forman alongside Debra Jo’s Kitty Forman, shared the gratitude he had for being able to bring the iconic character back to life.
“I’ve loved every minute of getting to bring Grandpa Red to life for you all,” he added. “I’ve said it before but it’s worth mentioning again…this show had so much heart behind it and the most wonderful cast, writers, directors, producers and crew an actor could hope to work with. Thanks for letting Red and Kitty, their grandkid, all their grandkids friends and neighbors, the original cast members of That 70’s Show and all of our wonderful guest cast members entertain you for two seasons.”
Still, he’s hopeful fans will get another chance to hang out down the street.
“To steal Red Forman’s words…we aren’t going to be dumbasses…we will shop the show,” he noted, “because good grandparents would try hard to get these kids graduated from high school. #That90sShow #bestfansever.”
While Netflix has yet to confirm the end of the series, the cancelation news, Kurtwood’s message comes a month after the final installment of season 2 was released on the streaming giant on Aug. 22.
That ‘90s Show, set two decades after the original sitcom, followed Leia, the daughter of Donna (Laura Prepon) and Eric (Topher Grace) as she spends the summer with her grandparents Red and Kitty. In addition to Topher and Laura, That ‘90s Show brought back Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis—who reprised their roles as Kelso and Jackie—and Wilmer Valderrama as Fez. Danny Masterson was the one original cast member that did not return, as he was in jail, after being convicted of multiple charges of sexual assault.
And the original cast members previously expressed hope that the new series stars would be able to spend as much time in the Forman’s basement as they did.
"I hope those kids have 10 seasons of that show,” Ashton told E! News in February 2023. "It was so cool. Kurtwood and Debra Jo are so amazing. I was doing The Ranch on Netflix and both of them came and were on the show. I love them dearly. I love the whole cast of the show, everybody that we worked with. I grew up with that team. Being able to go back in there and re-experience it was super nostalgic and really fun."
