Sarah Paulson is most proud of her role as Holland Taylor’s girlfriend.
During the 2024 Emmys red carpet, the American Horror Story actress exclusively detailed why she—despite earning a nomination for her guest role in Mr. and Mrs. Smith—was simply happy to be supporting her girlfriend through her Outstanding Supporting Actress nod for The Morning Show.
“Holland has been my absolute rock and has been with me in all of these things for many years and tonight I’m the girl that gets to hold her purse,” Sarah exclusively gushed to Laverne Cox on Live From E!: Emmys. “My nomination was last weekend, she’s the Primetime Emmy nominee, and I feel very honored to be standing here."
Indeed, Sarah’s award show category—which ended up going to Michaela Coel for her own guest appearance in Mr. and Mrs. Smith—was announced at the 2024 Creative Arts Emmys Sept. 8, but Holland, 81, didn’t hold back from praising Sarah, 49, for already tying her in Emmy nominations so early in her career.
“Both nine, I’ve had much longer to accomplish that,” Holland added to E!. “Decades longer.”
And while Holland had the unwavering support of her girlfriend of nine years, she lost the trophy for Outstanding Supporting Actress to The Crown’s Elizabeth Debecki—who also bested Christine Baranski, Greta Lee, Lesley Manville and Holland’s The Morning Show costars Nicole Beharie and Karen Pittman.
Still, Holland found playing her character alongside Nicole—including a difficult scene that saw her character Cybil grapple with her racism—very rewarding. As she noted, the best part of the character was, “How challenging it was to play her.”
“It was kind of meta,” she added to E!. “There I am in a situation that had a racial question, that was a very slippery one—and here she is the interviewer, and here I am, the person who made the horrible gaffe, and we have to talk it through. It was really, really painful. I’m an elderly white lady, she’s a person of color who’s a journalist. We loved it, but we were clinging to each other.”
In addition to clinging to her scene partner through the challenging on-screen moment, Holland and Sarah were equally attached at the hip for television’s biggest night. Keep reading for more couples who turned the 2024 Emmys into a date night.
